Pray for Daniel

remorse-face“Daniel” had over 5 years of sobriety from heroin and alcohol until a few weeks ago. That’s when he relapsed.

If you have every struggled with negative or self-destructive habits, you have at least some sense of the guilt, shame, and anger that Daniel is dealing with right now. If you thought you had finally conquered that awful habit—smoking, habitually criticizing your spouse, gambling, etc.—only to fall back into it after days, months, or years of not slipping up, you have an even better sense of what Daniel is dealing with. The type of sin matters less than the effect it has on our souls: whether it causes us to become less and less the person God wants us to be. As C.S. Lewis said in The Screwtape Letters, “It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the Nothing. Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick.”

Pray that Daniel is able to forgive himself for his fall and is willing to accept God’s grace and forgiveness, as well as help from others. Pray that God grants Daniel the serenity to accept the things he cannot change, the courage to change the things he can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Pray also that God grants him patience for the changes that take time, appreciation for all that he has, and the strength to get up and try again.
