Stories from the STreets Co-Director
When Al joined Emmaus Ministries in 2004, he did so mostly for the opportunity to do music full time and have health insurance. He and his wife Andi were tasked with the creation of Stories from the Streets, a program of dramatic monologue and music, using interviews with guests of the ministry as source material. “I saw it as a good creative outlet—beneficial for Emmaus, and a sweet deal for Andi and me.”
He didn’t realize how sweet a deal it really was until he started spending time with the men. “It caught me by surprise, really. How much I grew to love these guys. They mean so much to me, and have taught me so much about the Kingdom of God. Because of them, I have a hard time imagining leaving Emmaus.”
Music has always been a part of Al’s life, having had his first paying gig at age two, singing for his grandmother’s carpool. Since 1993, he has written, performed, recorded, produced, and taught music in a variety of contexts, but his soul remains best fed when singing with his wife as half of the duo “andi and i.” He leads the music team at Living Water Community Church, a Mennonite congregation in Chicago that he and his wife have been a part of for over 10 years.
