Many Christians don’t have meaningful contact with individuals dealing with homelessness, poverty, or addictions, or with those in the LGBT community. Consequently, false preconceptions and needless fears develop, hindering us from loving our neighbors as Christ Jesus desires.
Immersion Nights present an opportunity to change this—or, at least, to start.
An Immersion Night is an experiential learning opportunity. Through a briefing time at the Emmaus offices, a group learns about the work of Emmaus, as well as some street and bar culture. The group then spends three to four hours on the streets (in a well-lit, highly-traveled area), asking questions, listening, and learning. After that, the evening ends with some debriefing and discussion at Emmaus.
Here are more details:
- Immersion Nights take place from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. (This includes briefing, time on the streets, and debriefing.)
- Immersion Nights are for groups of 10 or more.*
- Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
- The charge for an Immersion Night is $100 per group. If that is a hardship, please contact us to make other arrangements.
*We will do our best to connect individuals or smaller groups with an already-scheduled Immersion Night. Check our Calendar of Events to find out when these are taking place.
Immersion Nights have had a profound impact on many people. Participants have reported that their fears of the city were overcome by the hospitality and welcome they experienced on the streets. Some were touched by a stranger’s story and were inspired to become involved in urban ministry. Some experienced a renewed awareness of the need all around them, and became determined to minister in their own communities.

In order to respect their privacy and protect the relationships of trust we have built, we do not allow one-time visitors to spend time with the men of Emmaus. We do, however, desire to build an awareness of the needs of men involved in survival prostitution and equip the Body of Christ to respond, so we offer an hour-long tour and educational experience at Emmaus.
If your group would benefit from visiting Emmaus, learning about the men we serve, and hearing about this ministry, we would love to host you. If you have more questions, contact the Educational Ministries Director by calling the Emmaus office at 773-334-6063 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
