Internship FAQ

Internship FAQ

What are internship requirements at Emmaus?

Internships are a minimum of 320 hours (comparable to two months at full time). This requirement is necessary for relationship-building between interns and Emmaus men. We believe a shorter internship is not beneficial to either the men of Emmaus or to the intern’s learning experience.

Applicants must first fill out and submit an application here. Candidates will be invited to visit Emmaus and complete an interview. Accepted interns are required to participate in our volunteer training before beginning their work with the men.

Can this internship be for academic credit?

Yes! We will do whatever we are able to meet the academic requirements for your internship. We have had interns in social work, psychology, sociology, various seminary programs, and other fields. When you apply, please include the requirements of your program.

What will I do during my internship?

Interns are involved in every area of the ministry, including Outreach, the Ministry Center, and non-profit administration. An internship generally consists of a combination of direct ministry and an administrative project. Interns who need or wish to focus on one area of the ministry should let us know—we’ll do what we can!

What are the living arrangements for interns?

Interns may live in our Kaio Community apartment or find their own housing in the Chicago area. If you choose to live in the Kaio apartment, room and board costs $300/month—a steal for rent and groceries in the city! (We can provide some pointers on fundraising if needed.) Emmaus provides furniture, linens, and other household supplies. You are welcome to bring things to decorate your room, but if you would like to bring anything large, please check with us first.

When can I do an Internship?

Emmaus offers semester and summer long internships.

Can I speak with a former or current intern about their experience?

Yes! Just email or call (contact information below). Also, during your interview, you will have the opportunity to spend an evening with the current intern and Kaio Community group. This will be a great opportunity to experience a night of community living and ask any questions you might have.

Can I bring a car to Emmaus?

Yes, you may bring a car, but in general, we advise against it. Take advantage of the great public transit system in Chicago!

How can I get more information?
