Kaio Community FAQ

Kaio Community FAQ

What are the requirements for Kaio applicants?

Kaio applicants must be 21 or older, but do not need to have any particular degrees or certifications. We are looking for people with open hearts and minds. Applicants must be interested in serving the Lord, open to learning from people, concerned about social justice, and willing to humble themselves.

Kaio applicants must first fill out and submit an application. Candidates will be invited to visit Emmaus and complete an interview. If you are accepted into the Kaio Community, you will participate in our training at the start of your year.

What are the living arrangements for the Kaio Community?

Kaio members share an apartment in the vicinity of the ministry. Emmaus provides furniture, linens, and other household supplies. You are welcome to bring things to decorate your room, but if you would like to bring anything large, please check with us first.

What about my student loans?

There are opportunities to defer most loans if you are participating in a volunteer service program. Ask about these options when applying for Kaio.

What about my other financial obligations?

Emmaus provides room and board, health insurance, and a weekly stipend for Kaio members.

Can I speak with a former or current Kaio member about their experience?

Yes! Just email or call (contact information below). Also, during your interview for the Kaio Community, you will have the opportunity to spend an evening with the current Kaio group. You’ll experience a night of community living, and be able to ask any questions you might have.

Is Kaio only for one year?

Not necessarily! Many of our Kaio members (in agreement with Emmaus) opt to stay for a second year, and find that this deepens the relationships with the men we serve and the effectiveness of their ministry.

Can I bring a car to Emmaus?

Yes, you may bring a car, but in general, we advise against it. Take advantage of the great public transit system in Chicago! (If you do bring a car, you will be responsible for all of the financial requirements.)

How can I get more information?

If you have more questions, contact the Educational Ministries Director by calling the Emmaus office at 773-334-6063 or emailing volunteer@streets.org.
