A Healing Space.
In searching for our new space, our team learned a lot about Trauma-Informed Design and how it affects an individual’s sense of identity, worth, dignity, and empowerment. As a result, we intentionally found a building that incorporated many of these elements, allowing clients to feel welcome and safe.
Our new center is not only accessible from every Chicago neighborhood but is also a beautiful space that incorporates Trauma-Informed Design in every detail. It promotes our clients’ safety, well-being, and healing, leading to self-worth and dignity. Aspects of this design include:
- Removing known adverse stimuli and environmental stresses
- Providing a connection to natural elements
- Actively engaging individuals in multisensory environments
- Supporting self-reliance and autonomy
From the natural elements, such as the wood floors and wooden beams, to the abundance of natural light that streams in the large windows to the high ceilings that create open yet inviting spaces, EMMAUS’ Survivor Support Center embodies Trauma Informed Design. It has allowed us to provide respite for our clients alongside opportunities for extended programming such as community days, cooking classes, and bible studies.
Without your prayers and support, this transition to our new building would not have been possible. For that, we are deeply grateful. The Lord has already used our new space to grow our organization’s reach, build new community relationships, and allow clients to receive the best care we can provide them.
