ARISE together.

Trafficking and exploitation of men and boys continue to grow at an unprecedented rate – in Chicago and around the world. Facing this challenge requires strategy, innovation, collaboration, and prayer. ARISE is an overview of our 2021/22 strategic objectives, each designed to support and empower male victims and survivors.

Apply Technology

Apply technology to reach victims.

We believe in meeting victims where they are.

A recent study found 75% of survivors of trafficking reported being sold online, and every day in Chicago, there are hundreds of online ads for males selling sex to survive. To bring hope to these men and boys, Emmaus is launching Freedom Signal, an online app specializing in reaching victims of online sex trafficking or sexual exploitation. Victims are 244% more likely to engage through this method, and it has proven to be 10 times more effective than street outreach alone.

Relocate drop-in center

Relocate Survivor Support Center.

We believe that anyone looking to exit the sex trade deserves access to support.

After studying data trends in the sex trade and listening to survivors’ feedback, it has become clear that strategically relocating Emmaus’ Survivor Support Center would allow greater access to victims and survivors. Our team has identified multiple sites in Chicago where a drop-in center is better suited to provide greater access to those we serve. These locations are close to public transit, near trafficking hotspots and proximate to partner service providers.

Integrate trauma-informed care

Integrate trauma-informed care.

We believe healing from exploitation is possible.

Trauma-informed care shifts the focus from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” A trauma-informed approach to care acknowledges those working with survivors need to have a complete picture of a person’s life situation — past and present — to help them heal and exit the sex trade.

This method is proven to work, and Emmaus is integrating trauma-informed policies, practices, and procedures at every level of the organization. This process includes – hiring trauma-informed staff, providing training to all employees and volunteers, and creating a safe environment for clients to avoid re-traumatization.

Support Survivor reinvestment

Support survivor reinvestment.

We believe restored people restore people.

There is no substitute for the credibility and experience a healed survivor can bring to the table. Their knowledge of “the life” provides truth and resonates with males trapped in the cycle of exploitation. Survivors are working with Emmaus to create more opportunities for other men to reinvest and support younger men and boys to exit the sex trade. These programs will build on the strength of survivors’ lived experience and apply that knowledge to outreach and mentorship efforts.
